How to care for a natural suede jacket?
Suede is genuine leather that has been tanned so that the surface is covered with fine hair. After tanning, the material has a dark brown colour, and through the process of brightening and dyeing it can also gain another shade. Suede garments and accessories are soft, pleasant and warm to the touch. As they are naturally elastic, they fit perfectly and keep their cut for years.
Due to the nature of the material finish, suede jackets are much more exposed to moisture and dirt than those made from grain leather. Therefore, try to be on the safe side and be careful not to stain suede. Improper care with water or ordinary detergents can cause colour change or stains. So how to clean clothes made of this type of leather?
1. Make sure it is properly waterproofed
When buying a suede jacket, be sure to get a specialised waterproofing product. It is best to treat the garment right away – even before you wear it for the first time. Impregnations for suede protect the leather surface from moisture. They also make the material more resistant to dirt. In this way, dirt does not penetrate deep into the material, and any stains that may arise are easier to remove.
Most of the agents available on the market have the form of a spray. Before using them, shake the container and spray the agent onto the surface of the suede jacket from a distance of about 20-30 cm. Then hang the garment on a hanger and let it dry completely away from the light and heat sources.
2. Remember to brush it regularly
This simple procedure will help you keep your suede jacket in great condition. Brushing ensures that particles of dust, dirt and other impurities do not penetrate deep into the suede, but can be removed on the spot. Brush suede gently, without pressing too hard on the surface of the material. It is best to use a special brush for this purpose. The hard bristled side can even remove stubborn dirt such as dried mud. On the other hand, the soft, rubbery surface will allow you to comfortably remove less complicated dirt dry.
3. Avoid contact between your suede jacket and water
Natural suede leather is very sensitive to water. For this reason, try to avoid getting suede garments wet. However, if you do get caught in the rain on the way home, make sure to dry the jacket thoroughly. It is best to hang the garment on a hanger and let it dry naturally at room temperature. Avoid hanging the garment near a radiator or in the sun to prevent the fabric from fading. When drying, it is also a good idea to gently stretch the leather from time to time. This way, the garment will not shrink and will keep its original cut.
4. Clean the suede jacket according to the instructions on the label
If there is more dirt on the surface, look at the instructions on the label before cleaning. The care of a suede jacket should always be done in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Sometimes gentle machine washing, for example, is acceptable, in other cases only hand or dry cleaning is involved. It is the safest to carefully follow all the information provided on the label and, if in doubt, return the jacket to a professional laundry.
5. How to renew the colour of suede?
By definition, leather clothing is bought to last for years. Especially since a women’s suede jacket ages beautifully, and subtle signs of use only add to its charm. However, if you want, you can refresh the colour of the material once in a while. There are many types of pigment formulas available on the market. Choose those designed for suede. They revive the colour and, at the same time, have the same effect as a traditional waterproofing treatment – protecting the surface from moisture and dirt. How to use them?

Clean the leather jacket thoroughly.
-
Spray evenly on a dry and clean surface from a distance of about 20-30 cm.
